In the recent climate change that has lead to massive drought in the most of parts of Kenya today. This made me think in times that we never existed in the face of this earth what was the solution when such disasters happened on our ancestors lands.
Kikuyu community droughts were experienced due to people disobeying taboos. There were many taboos which were to be followed strictly. Also droughts were experienced as a result of people not performing their rituals in order to please their gods. Therefore Ngai punished them with drought. This droughts were to be eliminated through performing rituals and offering sacrifices.
The kikuyu community there were sacred grooves and shrines present where sacrifices, offerings and rituals were offered. They performed rituals in order to please their gods.
Today more than 70 percent of Kikuyu claim to be Christian, but many have retained traditional beliefs as well. In times of need, such as drought, Kikuyu still turn toward Kirinyaga and perform ceremonies to Ngai. According to custom, Kikuyu homes are built with their doorways facing the mountain.
